Monday, Nov 19 - Exploring Sydney

We slept in until 7:30 on our very comfortable bed and joined Hilary on the thirtieth floor where the Executive Lounge is located and where most hours free goodies are available to “elite” guests. There were eggs, bacon, croissants, smoked salmon, yogurt and great porridge on offer and so we filled up.

We walked down the Circular Quay where the ferries, trains and buses leave from the edge of the harbor and bought tickets for a sightseeing bus tour to get a better idea of the city and suburbs. We got the front row seats upstairs which gave us great views, but the sunny sky soon clouded up and we were pretty chilled. We circled around the city, viewing museums, the Botanic Garden and other sights, and then transferred to a bus to take us out to Bondi Beach, the famous surfing beach east of Sydney. We drove past the semicircular beach with breakers rolling in and through the town. The bus didn’t provide much opportunity for photography so I couldn’t get a shot of the Sydney skyline and bridge which was pretty spectacular.

We retuned to the city and got off at “The Rocks” an area near our hotel by the foot of Harbour Bridge and stopped at La Renaissance CafĂ© Pâtisserie
, where we got delicious ham and cheese baguette sandwiches.

Hilary and I set off to shop while Bob relaxed at the Marriott. We walked down to David Jones, a nation-wide department store chain, and found an exhibit of Australian designer dresses. I am hardly a fashionable dresser, LLBean being my standard, but I was totally knocked out by the fabulous fabrics, design, colors, and workmanship. If I had a different lifestyle, I would have been tempted to buy a few frocks!

Hil and I returned to the hotel and went with Bob back to the Executive Lounge for hors d’ouvres, wine, champagne and an open bar. We didn’t indulge too much as we had to leave for Sailors Thai, a very good restaurant back in the Rocks, where we split a salad of banana flowers, coconut, chili & cashews. Then we had prawns with green chili sauce, red curry duck breast with coconut cream and pineapple, and wagyu beef with oyster sauce and basil. We split a dessert of coconut dumplings with a nutty center in a salty sauce. Really great!
